Sea-Pounded Stones Art Print is a limited edition print of a painting by contemporary artist Lawrence Dyer.
In this painting I have tried to capture the colours, textures and tones of the rounded boulders and stones on the shore close to Penkenna cliff, Crackington Haven, Cornwall. You will see in the painting that the stones furthest from the sea are still pale and dry, contrasting with the wet, darker rocks being washed over by the waves. Clearly this tells us that we are observing an incoming tide!
The seas around Crackington Haven can be beautifully blue in the brighter months when that wonderful Cornish light is so strong. I've tried to pick this colour up in my rendition of the water. We also see in the painting a wave breaking as it comes in: soon it wil break up on the stones to become clots of froth and churning water just as the remnants of the previous wave are clearly visible around the rocks.
So, in this painting we have two, not one, major waves -- the one breaking and half-way through its 'life-cycle', as well as the other one right at the end of its as it disintegrates into broken surf and eddies around the rocks. I enjoy it when I can indicate a story beyond the immediate and obvious that appears within a painting. Another example from a different painting would be clouds reflected in water where you can't see the clouds themselves: they are implied by their reflections, they exist but only outside the painting.
In these ways a painting can be more like a short film, creating movement over time and drawing on a world beyond its edges.
